Among the 2 million people ordered to evacuate their homes after being advised of the intensity of Hurricane Matthew, the Miller family immediately packed their bags. Their family and dog spent two nights in a hotel, however now they wish they had never left.
Miller stated “I will never evacuate again. If we stayed, we’d be fine. I’m sure there are a lot of people who feel the same way.” When the Millers arrived at their home after the hurricane had officially passed, they were rather upset that their home remained unharmed.
We live in a culture where people seem to get distressed when they prepare for the worst case scenario and it doesn’t occur. The point of evacuation is to prevent any loss of life or destruction, yet individuals are more concerned with the fact that they prepared for no reason. Predictions inflicted a storm surge up to nine feet above normal, along with large waves. People do not realize the actual dangers of water, which actually happens to be one of the main causes of death by hurricane.
On the contrary, other families wish they hadn’t stayed home, as they were facing massive beach erosion, flooding, and electric outages. We should ultimately be feeling rather safe than sorry. Although it might have been an inconvenience, everyone should be pleased to have a home to come back to because some were not as fortunate.
